Re-focused - New edition of the training manual for Mozambican HIV Prevention Focal Points in the education sector

Health Focus on behalf of the German International Cooperation (GIZ) supports the Ministry of Education and Human Development and its sub-national structures in improving and extending a gender-sensitive workplace programme and their interventions at national and decentralized level in the three target provinces Sofala, Inhambane and Manica. Health Focus has reached more than 25,000 teachers and administrative personnel in the education sector in Mozambique through training as well as information and awareness-raising events such as health fairs or debates. More and more teachers in the target provinces in Mozambique, a country with a high prevalence of HIV, decide to get tested for HIV.

Health Focus trains and supports HIV Prevention Focal Points on school, district, provincial and national level in the use of innovative information and education material and participatory methods in order to organize and realize information sessions with teachers. The centerpiece is a set of newly developed or adapted multimedia education material: Documentary and fiction films, video spots, radio programmes, a computer game, posters, leaflets and manuals are available to support the Focal Points in organizing informative and interactive awareness-raising activities. The implementation of these activities is guided by the manual “Em Foco”, which is the central medium of education for the Focal Points. It combines the project’s IEC products and cooperations, freely available IEC materials, participatory methods and strategic elements.

It contains instructions on planning and monitoring of workplace programme interventions as well as instructions on how to organize and implement health fairs and awareness-raising/ advocacy sessions and how to integrate local resources. The manual provides information about prevention of sexually transmitted infections, about chronic and opportunistic diseases, living with HIV, as well as rights and prevention of discrimination. It further explains, step by step, participatory exercises which enable Focal Points to share their knowledge with colleagues. A calendar with international and national public holidays and commemoration days (e.g. World AIDS Day) helps the Focal Points to plan health fairs and other events.

“Em Foco” was developed jointly with the target group in close collaboration with CoResult (www.CoResult.eu). Included are pictures which show teachers that are future users of the manual in order to strengthen the identification of the target group with its content.

A new series of trainings of HIV Prevention Focal Points in the provinces Inhambane and Sofala has started on 1st of March 2017. They are based on the new edition of “Em Foco”, which reflects the project’s experience in the past 3 years.

All materials presented in “Em Foco” can be accessed on the website www.ponto-focal-mz.org.
