Video-conferencing network in East Southern Africa

The WHO/GIZ supported ESA Knowledge Hub Network installed a video-conferencing network linking the Enhancing Care Initiative of the University KwaZulu Natal (ECI UKZN – Durban, South Africa), the ART Knowledge at AMREF (Nairobi, Kenya) and the Centre for Professional Development (CPD – Khartoum, Sudan). The network now facilitates multi-country teaching and learning in the field of HIV/TB programme management, HIV prevention, and AIDS and TB treatment and care.

ECI UKZN has developed interactive software allowing for real time transmission of training sessions integrating presenter and presentation. Video-conferencing training is used to include health personnel in remote areas of South Africa into training programmes taking place at the Campus in Durban. This approach reduces not only travel and accommodation costs for trainees, but also limits absence from workplaces to a minimum, without excluding a personal contact between teacher and student. The ESA Knowledge Hub Network expects to use the new technology to provide high-level regional training.
