Survey on Biosafety and Biosecurity in Sudan

The detection, surveillance and combat of dangerous infectious diseases and the safe, secure and responsible handling and diagnostics and research of pathogens and is important to improve the resilience against the natural or intentional outbreak of dangerous infectious diseases. Within the framework of the G8 Global Partnership, the German Partnership Programme for Excellence in Biological and Health Security fosters responsible conduct in life science, strengthens health and security, and supports professional biorisk management in Sudan.

The study assesses the current state of affairs with regard to biosafety and biosecurity ‘knowledge, attitude and practices’ (KAP) of laboratory staff in medical laboratories as well as among the academic population in the field of medical laboratory sciences in Sudan. To strategically plan future activities, the research provides essential data for formulation of key messages and required areas of focus in awareness raising campaigns within the field of biosafety and biosecurity in medical diagnostic laboratories personnel and universities. Additionally, it is intended to deliver hints with regards to the best means on communicating the distinct targeted beneficiaries and generate baseline data on the status quo of knowledge, attitudes and practices in the target districts as part of a framework for monitoring progress.

Participants included laboratory personnel at various professional levels from universities, private medical laboratories, governmental laboratories with advanced diagnostics, primary health care laboratories as well as practising laboratory science university students (N = 241).
