Health Focus Supports Launch of National eLearning Programme for SRHR Service Providers in Malawi

Health Focus, in collaboration with GIZ and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), facilitated a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop marking a major milestone in strengthening Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) service providers in Malawi.

The three-day workshop brought together 43 participants, including MoHS officials from national and district levels, representatives from Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi (NMCM), Medical Council of Malawi (MCM), Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA), Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi (PHASOM), WHO, academic institutions, GIZ staff, and consultants from Health Focus. The event served as both a capacity-building workshop and the official platform for handing over three new eLearning modules to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

Over three days, participants engaged with technical presentations, live platform demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. Working in three groups, they explored each of the three modules in depth — Reducing Maternal and Child Mortality (RMC), Youth-Friendly Health Services (YFHS), and Gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights — navigating the platform, completing learning activities, and testing assessments as a learner would.

A key feature of the workshop was its co-facilitation model: technical officers from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation worked alongside Health Focus consultants to lead every session.

Participants offered a series of concrete recommendations to strengthen the quality, accessibility, and long-term sustainability of the programme — from offline access in low-connectivity areas to more rigorous assessment questions and improved learner dashboards.

To translate learning into action, participants worked in district-based groups to draft implementation plans for the upcoming rollout in four pilot districts.

The workshop culminated in an official launch and handover ceremony, during which GIZ and Health Focus formally transferred all project deliverables — including finalized training materials, facilitator resources, learner assessments, validated storyboards, and the upgraded CPD platform — to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

The event represents an important step toward institutionalizing digital learning within Malawi’s health system, reflecting the Government's commitment to strengthening the skills and knowledge of health workers through accessible, high-quality, and sustainable continuing professional development.
